New York Fashion
Last year, the New York fashion week was opened by NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg, who even renamed, temporarily, one of the city's main subway routes the "Fashion Line" to honor the New York fashion week. The famous US designer Diane von Furstenberg accompanied the mayor at the opening ceremony and, a couple of days later, showed her collection in tents that were set up within the boundaries of the Lincoln Center in Damrosch Park. Many of the catwalks' front rows were thronged by a host of celebrities. The New York fashion week is the first of the most important yearly fashion weeks which are also held in Paris, Milan and London.
So, who are the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 Designers?
The fashion week in New York featured some of the US best designers as well as their latest look, including such designers as Isaac Mizrahi, Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Badgley Mischka, Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Lacoste, Buckler, Nicole Miller, and very many others.
This year's show wasn't without a twist, though. For many years the New York fashion week attracted hordes of people from all over the world, but this year, the anticipation was even greater with the debut of the first-ever plus-size only runway show that featured women who a bit more closely resembled the average American woman unlike their zero sized catwalk counterparts. Considering the fact that as much as 27% of American women are now thought to be obese, the show was also a positive confirmation of the progressively expanding market in plus size category.
The New York fashion week is visited by more than 235,000 people and contributes about 775 million dollars into the New York economy, which employs about 176,000 people in the fashion industry. Until now, the Fashion Week was held in more inconvenient location at Bryant Park, which is close to Times square.
Lincoln Center has become an ideal new location for the semi-annual event, providing more space than was previously available at Bryant Park. It also offers an excellent transit access, including the Number One subway line, for the time of the event called the Fashion line. The festival, which started September 9th also included a "Fashion Night Out" designed to encourage fashinistas from all over the world to party and shop into the early morning hours as the city's stores remained open into the night.
The New York Fashion week spotted more than 100 events, from an invitation-only "Victoria's Secret VIP Suite to a celebration of legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld. All in all it felt like a return to the good times for fashhion, even with the US economy only just re-emerging from the recession.
One could instantly tell that the advertising revenues spiked as the October issues of W, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and Vogue were glossier and thicker. To warm up the main events, many young designers have already been showing their fashions at the CFDA Fashion Incubator workshops. And, to help them avoid the classic blunders in new business, each of them was given 3 mentors specializing in the fashion industry.
The Metropolitan Pavilion served as a great venue for putting into spotlight the ethical threads of these designers, with its open space and high ceilings. The New York fashion shows have been very entertaining, accompanied by changing lighting, mood-setting music, and VIPs, writers and editors could be seen shuffling back and forth throughout the frenzied week.
